Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you all have a very restful and warm Thanksgiving. We did a number of activities to talk about the holiday and share what we are thankful for. What a great group for knowing how important friends and family are!

Reminder that there is no school on Monday or Tuesday! See you back at M.M.H. on Wednesday the 16th.

There will be no spelling this week with the short week.

Pumpkin Math
Happy Fall! We are almost half way through October already! It is the time for pumpkins and all things orange! In grade 2 we spend a day or two working with math and pumpkins. We explore measuring circumference, mass and height. We also problem solve and do a lot of comparing. Can you please send a pumpkin to school with your child October 22nd. Please do not send them well in advance as they tend to rot quite quickly. Please send a pumpkin that your child can easily carry independently. Thank you!

Halloween

Our Halloween parade will be on October 31 at 12:40 in the afternoon. You are more than welcome to come and watch the action. As a school we ask that parents please do not send your child to school in costume. Have the costume in their back pack ready to go for a quick change after lunch. We ask that parents keep the costumes at school very simple and easy for little ones to handle on their own. Please keep any weapons, super fancy makeup etc. at home and ready for the big Halloween night! Thank you for help with this!

Another week full of awesome events! Our trip to Galt Gardens was chilly but great. The students were very excited and were real troopers in the wind. Thank you to Mrs. Varty, Mrs. S. Baker, Mr. Sommerfeldt, Cassie’s Grandma and Mr. Slomp who all helped supervise. Our next trip will be to the Galt Museum. Stone Soup was fun and delicious. The students’ energy was through the roof! Thanks for being so generous with your contribution for the soup.

Character Education Kick Off

Our Character Education assembly was a great start to our families this year. We focused on the first habit of the 7 Habits of Effective Kids/Students. The first habit is BE PROACTIVE. We had great discussion on things we can control and things that are out of our control. This was a great concept to touch on how we can all create the “weather” around us. Are we choosing to be “stormy” or “sunny”? We will continue with these habits as the year progresses. Each child also shared an area that they feel they could be a leader in. For example: “I am a leader in hockey” or “I am a leader in math”.

Spelling words this week are:

end – send – well – went – next – tell – help – mess – less - yes

Sight words this week are:

Fire Prevention Week

Next week is Fire Prevention week. We will be having safety discussions and completing small activities about fire safety at home and school. A red note with a fire escape map has been sent home with your child. Please sit down with your child and draw a simple bird’s eye view map of your home to help your child be prepared for a fire escape plan. These plans are to be completed throughout the next week and returned to school by October 11th.

We will be doing some fun and valuable math with PUMPKINS! Please send a pumpkin that your child is able to carry without assistance to school. The pumpkins should be at school for October 22. Please do not send pumpkins the week before as they can rot quite quickly. Thanks!
